4th generation Apple TV not detected on my Macbook Pro 17 or Macbook Air

I can't connect to my 4th generation Apple TV on either my ancient Macbook Pro 17, (running OS 10.11.6) or 2-year old Macbook Air (running the latest Mac OS). Both laptops detect my neighbor's Apple TVs and my iOS devices will connect to my 4g Apple TV. It's set to allow all connections on my network, but my laptops won't detect it. What gives?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

computers need to be on the same network

if your router is not bridging the wired ethernet/2.4ghz wifi and 5ghz wifi then that could explain why your laptops would have problems

of cause not all MacBooks have what it takes in terms of hardware to do airplay mirror on the appletv

you can see the models supported listed here Use AirPlay to display video from your Mac on an HDTV - Apple Support
