Reinstall macOS after hard drive replacement

Hello!

I finally crossed over to the dark side (lifelong windows user) and got myself a 13.3" Mid 2012 MacBook Pro. Let me start off by saying what a wonderful machine it is. I've used it for about three hours and I'm already wondering why I didn't get one sooner.

ANYWAY, it currently has a 500GB hard drive, and I"m looking to upgrade it to a 2TB hard drive. I've looked online and the actual replacement looks like a breeze. My question however is this: When I replace the hard drive, can I "clone" the existing one onto the new 2TB HD? I"m not sure how to go about doing this. I am currently updating it to High Sierra, and once it's done, plan to replace the hard drive.

It came with lots of useful software that I don't have the CD's for, and I don't want to lose those programs. Any ideas are GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, macOS Sierra (10.12.6)

Hi,

Connect the new HD to the Mac > download Carbon Copy Cloner to your Mac > follow directions here to prepare the new HD (Preparing your backup disk for a backup of macOS | Carbon Copy Cloner | Bombich Software) > quit Disk Utility > open CCC > select the Source (your internal HD) > select the Destination (the new HD) > click on Clone > wait for it to finish > install the new HD in your Mac.

You can use an external USB backup hard-drive to create a backup of your current disk image.

Do this first.

Before you take out your old drive clone your drive to the new drive via the USB port with drive adapter using "carbon copy cloner app".

Then swap out your old drive with the newly image drive.

The mid-2012 MBP is a great notebook that is inexpensive, easy to fix and very durable.

Upgrade it once and never bother with it again.

SSD

RAM ( 16gb )

New battery.

You can do all of this for as little as $300 - $400

If you want to run boot camp and dual boot MacOS / MS-Windows then use a 500gb SSD or larger. ( 2 ) 250gb partitions.
