stuck on looking for incompatible software during data migration after upgrade

Hi -

I just added a 6Gb SSD to my 2010 iMac (27"). Everything working well except that when I tried to migrate my data from the HDD to the SSD (after installing High Sierra), the mac got hung up on "Looking for incompatible software". It's been all night with little progress on the progress bar.

In addition, the internal fan has been revving high since the installation.

Does anyone have advice for these issues?

Thanks.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

Really a 6GB SSD, thats really too small a capacity to do much of anything with it.
