iMovie not importing clips from iPhone 8

I'm trying to import video clips from my iPhone 8 directly into iMovie. I have a 27" iMac mid 2011 run OS 10.11.6

I launch iMovie (10.1.6) and then connect my iPhone. When I select the clips I want to import they appear black.

I click import clips and it runs through the process as it normally does but when complete, the clips appear blank. When I play the clips, I can hear the audio but not see the visuals.

When I eject the iPhone, my clips appear with the below error.

I've done it this way hundreds of times but just recently started having this issue, which coincides with me upgrading to the iPhone8 (from the 6).

I've imported the same clips into iPhoto and they process with no problem.

Hi,

You iPhone 8 by default exports video in the new HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) format. You need iMovie 10.1.8 and High Sierra to support that codec. So the solution would be to upgrade to those versions.

However, you can go into your iPhone 8 Camera and Video settings and select "most compatible" to export video instead of the high efficiency export option. That will export the videos in the standard H.264 codec that will import fine into iMovie.
