why cant we use siri to text in the car anymore?

I’m getting upset because I keep getting the alert that I need to unlock my phone but it’s not recommended while driving. I’ve always used Siri to verbally send and receive texts. I purchased the X and love that I can set it in the charger of my 17 Tacoma but this is not making any sense to me at all that text no longer works while connected to automotive Bluetooth.

Yes I’m aware of that. But it defeats the purpose if I have to pick up my phone and unlock it to have Siri read my texts to me. I drive a lot for work and have used Siri to read and send texts and massages for years all while keeping my phone on my hip or being charged. Now I have to unlock my phone for Siri to do the work. That makes absolutely no sense at all!

I feel like this must be a bug since it wasn't happening with my iPhone 6. Any official answer? Also I do have it set to use siri while locked so again, if this was an ID issue they wouldn't have that as an option. (To be sure, I just now set it to "off" and then "on" again so maybe it's one of those bugs that works after toggling. will check later).
