Are you using Aperture, as your question is in the Aperture forum?

In Aperture you can define keyboard shortcuts for all commands that are available in the menu.

Use the command "Aperture Commands > Customize" and then select the command you want o add a keyboard shortcut to from the list of all commands:

? nothing happens other then a tone .

Which application are you using? Your screenshot does not look like an Aperture 3 window. Are you trying to delete items in the Finder? Which version of MacOS X are you running?

Yes, the key combination ⌘⌫ is correct for "Move to Trash", but you cannot trash items that are in use by other applications, or where you do not have the correct access rights. If you try to delete protected items, you will just here a beep. Are you trying to delete items from a drive that has been used from another user account or a different Mac?
