The 5W power adapter (A1205) on my 80GB iPod classic has quit working. The iPod itself still works. I take great care of the device and adapter - matter of fact, the adapter has never left my home (maybe once or twice when it was brand new, wayback when) and still looks like it is brand new - how is it possible that the adapter quit working? And, is it possible that it may be prudently fixed?

It's long since out of warranty. However, it takes a standard power adapter. Apple sells them.
To expand on what IdrisSeabright has mentioned, many modern USB power supply units will work in place of the old one, so it doesn't have to be an Apple charger.
If memory serves me correctly, any USB power supply that can provide 500mA or greater will work. That figure should be on the label of the power supply unit. (This means that a USB supply "rated at 300mA" will not work, it's not powerful enough.)
One thing though, you are talking about the block that plugs into the wall, aren't you? If you mean that the cable from the power block to the iPod has failed, that's something else.
Thank you for your responses. I understand that I can use a replacement adapter (which I am) - my question was, why has the original adapter failed? I would expect the cable to disintegrate, the hard drive to fail etc. but certainly not the adapter! It is barely used and hardly ever exposed to the elements - I've always had it sitting behind a UPS that besides providing consistent power actually regulates the voltage in a perfect Sine wave - and I haven't really had even a brown out.

The only way to begin to know that would be for someone with knowledge of small electronics to take it apart. It's just not worth Apple's time to do that. Unless you could find a hobbiest who was equally interested, I doubt it will make any financial sense to do the diagnostics.

I'm amazed that you have a true sine wave UPS; usually those are in the $1,000 range. Most home UPS's are modified square wave, which is good enough for modern electronics (which are switching supplies, anyway). I've never had an Apple USB adapter fail, and my oldest is 17 years young; I think you were just unlucky.
The power adapter is something that is used very often.
I would take it to an Apple Store and let them check it.
