My photos on my iPhone are stored in iCloud. When I try to Airdrop a picture or video with my iPhone to someone it takes for ever. It stays in preparing mode for a while. By the time its finished preparing and ready to send it times out and I have to start airdropping all over again. I thought optimizing your pictures to iCloud was supposed to be easy, convenient and quick.

It is, but you need to remember, that by allowing iCloud to optimize your storage, you've allowed your photos to be removed from your device to be stored in iCloud instead. So to share, the phone has to "get it" from iCloud.
I’m having the same issue. I actually tried downloading the photos first before trying airdrop. Still an eternal wait as it “prepares”. Seems to have only started taking so long in the past couple months. Feels like it’s an issue with airdrop and the current iOS. Apple help us!!
No. iCloud photos is all or nothing.
Is there a way to select which photos or videos I do not want to send to the cloud? This way I can be prepared to air drop something quickly.
It's not just that it's downloading though. It takes 5 minutes to download 4 photos for airdrop, on a 15Mbps connection.
