Mail on my iMac is very slow

Since moving to OSX El Capitan version 10.11.6 my Mail has become slower and slower. Every time I try to open an email I see the rainbow beachball rotating for several seconds before it opens.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), 27 inch with 1.12TB Fusion Drive

Thanks for your instructions. I ran the report again and Cleanup was successful. Quitting and reopening Mail or even shutting down the computer and restarting does not correct the problem. I have used Automator.app to prepare the workflow below - it does not work either.User uploaded file

I have found my way to User home/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.

As I am somewhat new to this I would appreciate an expansion on your last instruction before I move the folder to the desktop.

If Mail does not have access to this folder what can I expect to see when I relaunch Mail?

Will I be able to see if the problem is resolved if Mail does not have access to this folder?

What happens to any incoming mail whist I am performing this task?

If the problem is solved what do I need to do to recreate my Mail settings and import all my Mail?

You said "If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there." How does the second folder get there?

Please accept that I am 75 years old and a little slower than I would like to be.

Cheers.

Try running this program in your normal account, then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy Report” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

I don't see any installed software that should be causing a problem. If you quit Mail and reopen it does it do the same thing?

See if this helps.

Do a backup, preferably 2 on 2 separate drives.

Quit Mail.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail. Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.

Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

If that doesn’t solve it repeat the above using Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent.

Information learned from Linc Davis. Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Following the instructions should take you to a folder named com.apple.mail. Just make sure you move the entire folder as opposed to moving the files in the folder. When you restart the computer, and reopen Mail, a replacement folder gets generated. You may have to readjust some of your Mail settings. Nothing abnormal should happen to incoming e-mails. If the problem is solved, just add back any Mail settings that aren't there. As I posted, the folder gets regenerated.
