MacBook Pro System storage huge???

I have a Macbook Pro, Early 2015 running 10.12.6

I am a student.

I have System storage taking up 176 GB of 250 GB. why? and how do I get it where it ought to be? I have no unusual programs loaded and I am not quite sure what Apple calls a system storage. Can anyone give me some hints to free up my space?

Thanks;

Re-index Macintosh HD.

Do this twice. This will take a while. wait until it is finished.

System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

If Macintosh HD shortcut is not shown on the Desktop

Click on an empty spot on the Desktop to activate Finder.

Finder > Preferences >General > Show these items on the Desktop:

Enable Hard disks
