Mac Freezing because of battery?

For a few days now my computer has been freezing up regularly. I'll turn it on, it'll run fine for three minutes or less, then everything will freeze and I'll have to restart it.

I thought it was a problem with the battery because it had said it needed servicing so I took it out to try running it without one, same result. (I know, I shouldn't remove the battery, but hey.). Then it seemed to work okay as long as I didn't use it while it was charging, but now that doesn't matter either.

I can't get anything done like this! The computer is a mid-2012 13 inch MacBook Pro running high sierra. I haven't downloaded any suspicious applications or anything. I tried doing a factory reset and it helped for about two days then went back to doing this. What should I do? Is there a particular part I should look into replacing?

I suspect you have unneeded and ill-advised software that is causing problems. You can post a snapshot of your configuration so we can look for known troublemakers. Fortunately there is a safe and secure way to do that.

A respected and long-serving member of these communities has created a simple utility that will take a "snapshot" of your configuration without revealing any sensitive information about you and your computer. It is Etrecheck, and is available here:

http://etrecheck.com/

Run it and, when its report displays, click the "Share Report" icon and then "Copy Report" from the resulting dropdown. Paste the entire report into a response to your own thread here. It will allow us to quickly identify or eliminate software as the problem.

Have you ever added RAM? If so what brand?

To get it running enough for a test:

1) disconect any external devices other than the power charger

2) Start in SAFE MODE by holding SHIFT durring boot. It will take longer to boot thant normal but wait for a working desktop to appear.

3) Without using the computer, restart normally.

Now see if it will run long enough to download and run Etrecheck.

No, I never installed or replaced my RAM. A few months ago I had to replace my ribbon cable, would that have something to do with it?

It's not working. Even after that the etrecheck gets stuck on checking software until the computer beachballs and freezes. I swear I didn't download anything though; just Spotify and an acclaimed writing application called Scrivener.
