Mac Freezing because of battery?

For a few days now my computer has been freezing up regularly. I'll turn it on, it'll run fine for three minutes or less, then everything will freeze and I'll have to restart it.

I thought it was a problem with the battery because it had said it needed servicing so I took it out to try running it without one, same result. (I know, I shouldn't remove the battery, but hey.). Then it seemed to work okay as long as I didn't use it while it was charging, but now that doesn't matter either.

I can't get anything done like this! The computer is a mid-2012 13 inch MacBook Pro running high sierra. I haven't downloaded any suspicious applications or anything. I tried doing a factory reset and it helped for about two days then went back to doing this. What should I do? Is there a particular part I should look into replacing?

I suspect you have unneeded and ill-advised software that is causing problems. You can post a snapshot of your configuration so we can look for known troublemakers. Fortunately there is a safe and secure way to do that.

A respected and long-serving member of these communities has created a simple utility that will take a "snapshot" of your configuration without revealing any sensitive information about you and your computer. It is Etrecheck, and is available here:

Run it and, when its report displays, click the "Share Report" icon and then "Copy Report" from the resulting dropdown. Paste the entire report into a response to your own thread here. It will allow us to quickly identify or eliminate software as the problem.
