About this Mac not displaying

iMac

OS X El Capitan 10.11.6

Choosing About this Mac from the Apple menu does not produce the usual splash screen (or anything else)

Choosing System Information (same menu and position, with option key down) also fails to present the usual report (or anything else).

Both menu choices present the expected displays on my MBPro running the same OS version.

Suggestions?

Barry

Both things are windows of the System Information app, found in /Applications/Utilities. Does it open directly from there ?.

Does it work for another User Account ?.

Are there any relevant crash or diagnostic logs in Console.app - User Reports for when it fails to open ?. Any log messages at all that correspond with the exact time you try ?.

Also check in the Safe Mode.

Safe Mode - About El Capitan
also Sierra

Safe Mode Startup – El Capitan. also Sierra

If it works in the Safe Mode, try running this program when booted normally and then copy and paste the output in a reply. The program was created by Etresoft, a frequent contributor. Please use copy and paste as screen shots can be hard to read. On the screen with Options, please open Options and check the bottom 2 boxes before running. Click “Share Report” button in the toolbar, select “Copy to Clipboard” and then paste into a reply. This will show what is running on your computer. No personal information is shown.

Etrecheck – System Information

System Information.app is listed in the Applications folder on the MBP, but not in the same folder on the iMac,

On the iMac, the list position holds "System Profiler.app" (with the extension hidden).

Get info suggests they are the same application: Same creation date and time, same size, same privileges list.

"System Information" on MBP open on double clicking in Finder (and can be opened from the Apple menu).

"System Profiler" on iMac presents a dialogue box: The application "System Profiler" can't be opened.

Does it work for another User Account ?.

No. Tried on 2 accounts, one "managed" the other an "Administrator"

Identical behaviour in both accounts: Menu choice highlights when mouse pointer is on it. On releasing mouse button, the menu closes. No subsequent action.

Are there any relevant crash or diagnostic logs in Console.app - User Reports for when it fails to open ?. Any log messages at all that correspond with the exact time you try ?.

None. Made several attempts to open from menu, then refreshed the Console. Tried a couple by double clicking on the application in Finder, then closing the dialogue, and refreshed/reloaded Console.

No new log messages in either User diagnostic or All messages.

Barry

PS to Eric: Safe Mode and Etrecheck are on my list. Other chores to do before I'll get to them, including some suggestion from Epson on chasing down a printing issue with the same iMac.

I've seen a few reports of this. It should be System Information, just as your MBP has.

Whilst it might be successful to disable SIP & copy it from another computer, then re-enable SIP; a reinstall from Recovery may well be simpler & even quicker; depending on your internet connection speed.

Hi Eric,

Booted into Safe Mode. No change. Selecting About this Mac or option-select of System Information… both produce the same result: Menu closes. No further actions. Tried on an Admin account. Did not retest on a second account.

I suspect the issue is having "System Profiler" where "System Information" is the expected application.
