iTunes states I have more free space than my ipad storage

I am trying to update my ipad to iOS 11.2.x

I had trouble doing it wirelessly, so I was told by support to do it via iTunes.

I got is started, and once it was going I step away from it. I came back and had an error stating that the ipad had disconnected. No idea why would that happen, nobody touched it.

I tried to restart, and now I get an error that there is not enough memory in the ipad to do it.

iTunes reports that I still have over 6GB free. But the ipad, under Settings-Usage and Storage, says that I have about 680MB. Why the discrepancy? I did not get any related error when I first attempted. Is it possible that the iOS update file is using space?

Will appreciate any help that you can provide.
