Why are iMessages appearing on my iPad but not coming through on my iPhone?

I have the iPhone 8 with IOS 11.1. I have text messages appearing on my iPad and not my iPhone. I have tried turning off Messages and restarting my phone and turning on again. Not all, only some it happens to. Any ideas.
