How do I connect to another device as a different user

I realize file sharing is now a part of the system software and not just server, but I could not find an appropriate forum to post this question.

When I try to log in to a server as a user on my network from the finder, it defaults to my Apple ID so I only see the shared folder. I would like to connect as a known user on the device but it will not let me. The Apple ID keeps defaulting in and showing the public shared folder on the computer. I have tried cancelling and entering the UserID and password for the user on the device but it keeps defaulting to my apple ID. How can I get passed this?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, macOS Sierra (10.12.1)

I haven't tried this but I would hit the command key and the letter k.

The should bring up the Connect to Server dialog box.

Depending on the file share you are connecting to at a protocol to be thorough.

afp://

smb://

http://

vnc://

ftp://

...

after the protocol you can use the ip address to the point to the server, you can also use the domain name of the server or if BonJour is working the computer name with .local on the end.

If your computer finds the protocol specified a username and password will show up and you can login to the server using any user with a login.

I believe one isn't able to connect to a server under a new username if already authenticated to that particular server using Open Directory login.

In Finder in the right pane have you clicked on Disconnect (upper right) then Connect As and fill in the username and password of the user you want to connect as? I just tried this from a High Sierra client to a High Sierra server and I connected as that user. It also works from a Sierra client to the same High Sierra server.

I see what you're saying. The AppleID always shows when showing Connected As even though the username/password was changed. You're expecting the Connected As to change to the username you entered. Even though Connected As doesn't change, does the result view of shares change if it's different than your AppleID?

Maybe the next dot release of High Sierra will fix that.

I am remote - not on my Lan, and after a long delay, SMB worked. AFP did not. Showed a blank shared window in the finder.

Interestingly, not on my lan, it did allow me to connect to my device from the finder and I logged in as the user (which shares my Apple ID but is not my apple ID) and I was able to see the user files. But the odd thing is that is shows that I am connected as my AppleID. Go figure.

You see the issue. What is odd that I am now 1k miles from my LAN, use the finder as I did on my LAN and I log in as the user (which shares my apple ID) and I can see the user directories. In the upper right corner, I see that I am logged in as my Apple ID. Same ID as on my LAN but now I see the user directory. Odd.
