i would like to connect to an external monitor to have a larger screen for Autocad

Assuming MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) - Technical Specifications is your MBP, you can either use a Thunderbolt (or DisplayPort) monitor up to 4K or use a HDMI monitor which supports 4K.
What is the year/model of your Mac and macOS Version? Do you need to connect when booted in Windows or macOS, or both? What is the brand/model of the external display you want to use?
Macbook Pro 15"Retina (mid 2015) version 10.11.6. Running Parallels 11.1.2. Only need the monitor when in Windows 7. I haven't decided on a monitor.
I tried Apple TV. The problem became one of resolution. The autocad on macbook became very large and couldn't be changed. Changing resolution on tv did not help.
