safari "compass" icon persists after download

I just updated to iOS High Sierra 10.13.1, and since then, when I do a download through Safari, the Safari "compass" icon appears during the download, but then persists on the screen when the download is completed. If I switch to other program screens, the "compass" icon shows up there as well. I have to quit Safari to make the "compass" icon go away. Any ideas about a fix? I am running Safari 11.0.1 on a late-2013 iMac with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 1 GB graphics board.

Turn on “Handoff” and test.

Turn Handoff on or off

Note: If you don’t see a Handoff option on your device, it doesn’t work with Handoff.

On your Mac: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click General, then select “Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud devices” (below “Recent items”). To turn it off, deselect the option.
