ipod touch 6th gen. low battery warning

Why am I getting low battery warnings at 18-20% yet the moment I plug in the Apple Power Cube the iPod indicates 42%?

I have tried the recalibration (running the ipod down till it shuts off, trying to turn on again and if it does again running it down to power shut down followed by a full recharge. However after a day or so it is back to the power low warning and the 40-42% indication as soon as I start a charge even for just a few seconds.

My ipod touch is model MKHL2VC/A

ios version 11.11 (15B150)

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
