Question: Move audio files / loops to external hard drive - Logic use

To make more space on my laptop I wanted to put all my loops to my external hard drive. For Logic use.

So, I found this info and followed these steps:

•••Establish where your loops are, then delete the index files from the accompanying *Apple Loops Index* folders (they're text files).

these are the default Apple Loops locations:

YourHD/Library/Application Support/Logic

YourHD/Library/Application Support/Garageband

After deleting those index files, you open Logic>Loop Browser and you drag the folders that contain the loops *onto the browser* and wait patiently until Logic has made new indices. Can take 5 to 20 minutes, depending on the number of loops and the power of your Mac.

So basically I moved all my apple loops and my own packages of loops to an exernal harddrive. I deleted the .txt files and now try to drag my loops from my hard drive into logic loops. But nothing happens. And no, there is no new .txt files in the Loops Index folder with new indices. All the loops are grey / can't use.

About the Apple Loops Index folder, that is outdated information. Since 10.3 Logic uses a separate LoopsDatabase file to store the indexed information. That file is located in the users directory ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Databases/

Regarding placing the various Logic Sound Files outside the pre-determined location where Logic is expecting to find those files, you can try Aliases, but the proper way to do it is a little bit more complicated and involves creating SymLinks.

Hope that helps
