Can't register new phone for applecare

Trying to register iPhone X, received today, online for Applecare using the serial number but it keeps saying the phone must be registered on a network to enable this. The phone is fully workable with Vodaphone. So why is it not recognising that it has been registered?

iPhone X, iOS 11.1

If you purchased the AppleCare along with the iPhone, and purchased both through an Apple Store (either online or a physical store), then the AppleCare should be already registered. See it at:

If you actually purchased the AppleCare separately from the iPhone, and received a certificate with a number to register the AppleCare (not the iPhone serial number - a different number), then you should wait a day or two to perform the actual registration.
