FUSE and macOS High Sierra

Hi, after upgrading to the macOS High Sierra, I keep getting a message upon booting that FUSE is an older version and will not work with the new operating system. I don't remember installing FUSE. Should I delete it? Thank you.

Get rid of Avast. You do not have the RAM for it anyway. Also it is really not doing any good on a Mac.

Get rid of CleanMyMac. It has been the cause of many problems reported in this forums

I do not know which of the other 3rd party items you have installed are using FUSE, so I'm just going to ask questions about some of the packages

com.lge.driver.LGAndroid

I assume it is related to your Android phone. Does it make your phone look like an external disk you can drag and drop files between? That would be a use for FUSE to make the phone's file system look like it was an external disk.

com.disc-soft.DAEMONTools.PrivilegedHelper.plist

I don't know what this is, but disc-soft makes it sound storage related, so I'll ask if maybe it installed FUSE?

com.nero.HSMMonitor.plist

Same question? What does it do. Is it file system related?

CableFreeUSBLauncher

And this?

Another option is to uninstall FUSE, and see what breaks 🙂

Hello again susanamac,

I think the easiest way would be to use a little diagnostic program I wrote that shows what kind of low-level system modifications are installed. Download EtreCheck from https://www.etrecheck.com, run it, and paste the results here. EtreCheck is perfectly safe to run, does not ask for your password to install, and is signed with my Apple Developer ID.

EtreCheck will show FUSE and hopefully will also list the app that installed it.

Disclaimer: Although EtreCheck is free, there are other links on my site that could give me some form of compensation, financial or otherwise.

Hello susanamac,

I don't see any FUSE kernel extension. But you do have a FUSE 3rd party preference pane. Go to System Preferences, find the FUSE ppreference pane in the bottom row, control-click or right-click on it and choose Remove.

Please follow up if you can't find that preference pane or if this does not correct the problem. The new High Sierra operating system has some new behaviour regarding kernel extensions like FUSE. This new behaviour is, to put it bluntly, very buggy. I need to add some logic in EtreCheck to help people deal with this.
