Apple Watch setup issue

Just got an Apple Watch. Steps require me to pair with iPhone (did that), then complete setup on my iPhone. The iPhone requires me to download and install an update for the watch but when I press “continue “, it says the watch needs to be connected to wifi. I‘m never given the opportunity to connect to wifi. I unpaired the Devices and started over, thinking I missed a step but I end up at the same stopping point. Anyone know how to resolve this, without me having to go back to the Apple Store?

First update your iPhone to the latest compatible software version:


Update the iOS on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support


Then follow the remaining steps here to pair and update your Apple Watch, ensuring that your iPhone is connected to Wi-Fi (not Mi-Fi) and if necessary including contacting Apple Support via the link in the first article:
