Hello,

You should uninstall whatever AV software you have - a lot just create problems on a Mac.
As for restoring, you can follow the instructions here:
https://support.apple.com/kb/ph25601?locale=en_US
You may also want to download and run a diagnostic utility: run it and copy the entire report here. Etrecheck will give us an idea on what is installed and/or may be causing problems. It does not contain any personal info.
It's me again. I am not that techy. I was receiving many interrupting messages from McAffee the other day saying I had a virus and needed more protection. I figured out how to stop the messages and then asked Google which was the best virus protection program for a Mac since mine is getting older. I paid for and downloaded TotalAV and did a scan. Since then my Mac is acting up and many of the programs I had won't open and have error messages. Like Excel, Word, etc.
You use your Time Machine backup and/or any other backup method you used.
Thank you. My last back up was 10/23/17. I have it on a G-Drive Mobile USB, it is plugged in now but I don't know how to make it restore back to that date. Can you tell me how?
