Question: External Hard Drive

I stored all of my pictures on my external drive (last 4 years worth) and then deleted them from the cloud. I only used the drive one time - after downloading I closed out and then checked the drive to make sure I had successfully downloaded.

Now one year later when I attached my external drive to my Mac I cannot get my Mac to recognize the drive, I get a message that it needs to be authenticated; however there is no screen (or popup) to do this.

What can be done?

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6), G Drive USB-C external drive
