rtf file appears to be truncated when transferred from APFS to HFS+

An rtf file appears to be truncated when I transfer it from a MacBook Pro with the new APFS to an iMac still running the HFS+ file system. Both machines have been updated to highSierra 10.13.1. Actually the data is still there. When the file is transferred back to the APFS system, the part that looked truncated on HFS+ shows up again. Anyone else seen this behavior?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), macOS High Sierra (10.13.1), iMac is also running 10.13.1
