With a new 12 inch MacBook Photos.app has a wide white bar at the top when viewing images in Full Screen. What happened to the all black background? Always though full screen was supposed to be non distracting. Hopefully an update will correct this soon. (Yes, all is up to date.)

Try this Photos menu item selection:
Then "Uncheck" Always Show Toolbar and Sidebar in Full Screen."

You could also make the toolbar black:
System Preferences > General: Enable "Use dark Toolbar and Dock".
This way you can keep the toolbar visible in Full Screen Mode, but it will be dark.
