How do I update from snow leopard?

Having problems with Safari and Chrome picking up malware and adware.

How do I update a MacBook Pro from Snow Leopard in 2017? A lot of the messages are old. How do I figure out how far to push the MacBookPro7,1 with Intel Core 2 Duo Processors and 2.4 GHz speed and 8 Gigs of Ram? Should I leave it at 10.6.8 or can I push it to Yosemite or Sierra? Should I go in steps or jump to Yosemite?

We primarily use this computer for internet, Photos, Music and videos.

I think we can get Microsoft Office and Apple products to work on Yosemite.

If this one goes well, I will consider upgrading some of the other computers.

Thanks,

VIN, MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS 10.6.8

Generally, the next step is to back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, click here, and download El Capitan from the Mac App Store. After installing it, you can download Sierra or High Sierra if desired.
