MacOS High Sierra update fail

I am not very techy (just to put it out there beforehand). I got a notification on my laptop saying that i need to install an update on my computer. Pressed install and after a while a wondow poped up saying that it could not be installed. It said to restart the computer. Which I did. And all it came up with was a file folder with question mark in the middle of it. I read online and found out about recovery mode. Tried to install it through there and it says it has about 3hrs and 53mins remaining. It stayed like that for good 24hrs now. What should I do as I am gettin really frustrated....
