Sounds like you need to reset the SMC, as per > How to reset the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
Thanks for your tip. I followed the instructions provided by Apple which was to unplug the power cord for 15 seconds in order to reset the SNC. Unfortunately, this didn't work and my iMac continues to restart every time I shut it down. I have also tried holding down the Shift key during start-up as this was also suggested. No luck with that either. Any other techniques to try or should I jjust contact Apple Support? Thanks again!
What OS version are you running? ("iOS 11.1" as shown in your equipment profile runs only on Apple's mobile devices, not on their computers).
Is anything blocking air intake and exhaust vents?
Do any of the following apply:
1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimization" applications?
3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud or DropBox (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?
6) Did your financial institution ask you to install Trusteer EndPoint Protection (also known as Trusteer Rapport)?
Run EtreCheck and post back with the results, so that we might get a better idea of what going on with your system. EtreCheck is safe and does not report any personal information.
For starters I see:
1. Your Hard Drive is getting full. Not dangerously full at this point, but it is working on the slowest part of the Platters.
2. You only have 4GB of RAM, hardly enough to run macOS let alone other App's.
3. You have a lot of internet plug-in
What I would do:
1. Make a little more space. 10% or 100GB would be a better place to be.
2. Install at least 2x2 4GB or 2x4 8GB of RAM in the two empty slots.
3. Loose some or all of the internet plug-in.
Then post back with another report.
Thank you for the suggestions. I have been moving files off of the internal drive to an external one and then deleting them. Will continue to do so to free up more space as you've suggested.
Can you define what internet plug-ins are? Im not aware of any that I've downloaded. Can I find them in a particular location?
is it actually (chiming, with the Apple icon above the loading bar) restarting...?
or is it coming back on (immediately) like waking up from sleep mode...?
Chime, logo and progress bar every time it restarts on its own.
Running OS X 10.11.6
None of the other questions apply.
Plenty of ventilation on all sides of the iMac.
Thanks!
Thank you! It will likely be tomorrow (Sat.) before I can run Etrecheck as the iMac is my home computer and I'm currently at work and have social plans tonight.
No hurry!
There is always someone around including the developer to assist, if I'm not around when you post the report.
Hi. I posted the results of the etrecheck on Saturday. Just wanted to make sure you saw it and hoping to get some insight/advice at your earliest convenience. Thanks again!
