The ones in Canada don't have a carrier assigned to them, because it's illegal here, but I still would not go this route. Anyone that got an X in Canada either from Apple or from the carriers, they all came unlocked. SIM-Free, to put it in a different sense.
Apple will not unlock "carrier branded" phones, so don't even ask.
As of now, all the phones have a carrier assigned to them. There is no way of knowing when the no carrier phones will be released.
