Problems changing Apple ID

Currently using iPhone 6s have repeatedly tried to change my Apple ID to the current email address that I am now using, every time I enter it in I get a Underneath saying email account not valid. It is valid I get several emails a day on it delivered on my iPhone 6 it is a Gmail account any ideas why it will not take it
