Ipod works fine when coonected to pc, updated 14/Nov/2017
will not swtch on when disconnected, I have reset it many times but just getting a black screen. Any Ideas?
I also have the Ipod classic which is older and had no problems with that.

Your iPod likely has a defective battery, meaning it cannot hold a charge. If you live in California, you can have the battery replaced at a cost of $59 + tax.
