The 2006 iMac's have three USB 2.0 ports and two FireWire 400 ports for plugging external hard drives into.
You can plug in and use most any USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 external hard drive into one of your 2006 iMac's USB 2.0 ports.
Keep in mind that while USB 3.0 is backwards compatible to USB 2.0 and that a USB 3.0 drive will only communicate at the slower USB 2.0 speed.
