2008 mac pro boots in 10.4 but not 10.10

I have two operating systems on a 2008 Mac Pro tower. The reason is that one OS uses on old scanner, and the other is 10.10 to do Photoshop work.

My computer will default to 10.4 now upon boot up.

Restarting with the option key will allow me to choose 10.10, but it usually hangs up on the gray screen before the finder launches. I am usually stuck there and I have to re-try.

If the finder launches, it takes forever to display the desktop and will often hang up on the desktop. I'm usually stuck with a spinning beach ball. I'll wait 20 min and still the same result.

But in OS 10.4, it boots no problem.

Any ideas?

It certainly sounds like your macOS 10.10 image has been damaged. If you have a Trusted Backup (of YOUR files from that drive, not necessarily MacOS), you can do a Re-Install-in-place. By design, this re-writes over 350,000 files that make up MacOS. It does not bulk-erase any non-System directories, so all your files and Applications are intended to be preserved.

But if your drive is near failure, this could push it over the cliff into complete failure (thus the need for a Backup before you begin.)
