How do I get rid of the split screen view on my iPad Pro which I have accidently set

I have something accidently so that my iPad Pro has a split screen view when in the landscape orientation viewing Safari pages. It also shows the start-up Apple icon on its side when I turn it on. I use an Apple keypad with it so need to use it in landscape not portrait orientation. I have tried the instructions to change Settings out of multitasking and also to try sweeping across the screen from L to R but nothing restores it to single screen view. How can I get the single screen view back with the iPad in landscape orientation?

iPad Pro Wi-Fi, iOS 11.1

When you’re in split screen view, do you see a little whitish vertical ‘bar’ between the two windows? If so, drag it to one side to close the app on that side.

That’s how I go back to single screen view on my mini 4, so hopefully it’s similar on the pro
