How to change the owner and not lose the music

I was given a Nano and it has music on it I want to keep but until I change the name its associated with I cannot add new music. How can I change ownership and not erase the songs installed. I had tried on a different one in the past and lost all my music.

You cannot.

The previous owner did not have the right to give you, or sell to you, the music on that iPod. You have no right to keep the music, so go ahead and delete the music that's on there now and put your music on it instead.
