Extended Desktop

I have Imac, (Early 2009, V. 10.11.6) which I would like to connect to my MacBook Pro, (Mid 2010, V. 10.11.1) to create an extended desktop. I recently bought a Minidisplay to Mini display cable, but that is not working. Is it even possible to create an extended desktop with these macs?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)
