Question: Space available on SSD decreases when files are trashed?

I just upgraded from Sierra to High Sierra two days ago, and this afternoon I deleted about 18GB of Lightroom catalog backups to recover some space on the 1TB SSD in my mid-2014 MacBook Pro. Before I trashed the files and emptied the Trash, the Get Info command in the Finder showed that I had 524 GB available on the drive. Afterward, I found that I had LOST 30GB instead of gaining 18. Now the drive only has 494 GB available! The files are indeed gone from my Pictures folder, and the Trash is empty. What's going on?
