macOS could not be installed on your computer - an error occurred installing macOS

How can I fix this?

I've formatted my MacBook SSD in Extended(Journalled). Then started up with external drive and used macOS High Sierra Installer App to install a new OS on the SSD. The installer prepares successfully, then restarts. Further installation occurs and then the following error message comes up:

When I look at the disk, it has been reformatted in APFS and has installer files on it. Then the only way I can try to reinstall the OS on it is to reformat it again.

I've tried restarting in Restore mode and selecting install OS but this just hangs.
