You only have a 500 GB hard drive? Using iCloud, all files stored in iCloud are stored on your computer. If running macOS Sierra or later, you have the option to go to System Preferences/iCloud/iCloud Drive/Options and turn on Optimization for the items in that box. When computer space gets low, files will be removed from your computer and stored only in iCloud with an alias on your computer. Another option to save hard drive space if you want to sync photos to iCloud is to go to Photos/Preferences/iCloud and turn photo optimization on. A thumbnail is stored on the computer, while a full resolution photo stored in iCloud. iCloud isn't an external drive like Dropbox. If you have more questions, please feel free to ask.
