I upgraded the operating system from the alert icon on my IMAC. Now it is hung in install mode, and a DOS like screen before shutting off. ANyone know why and what is the fix?

Thats a Kernel Panic. Try resetting the PRAM and see if that helps. Instructions for doing so are in iMac SMC and PRAM reset
By chance did you upgrade the RAM on this computer and if so exactly what type of RAM (including manufacturer) did you install??
No. this computer was purchased early this year. I just saw an alert in the upper right that an upgrade for the OS was available. I cicked and it started downloading, then install after a few hours my wife noticed it was still running and shut down.
OK i held those KEYS for like 5 minutes it seems. the install bar started moving a little, then restarted and moved to the halfway mark and i let them go. It opened to MACOS Utilities. Should i run disk utilities?
I did repair disk then. Reinstall. Seems to be installing ok. thanks for the help and second option with the PRAM reset worked.
