How to copy project from from one HD to another?

Hello,

I'm using Final Cut 10.3.4 on a late 2016 Macbook Pro running High Sierra.

I'd like to copy a FCX project file, and all the associated data from one Hard Drive to another (basically replicate the entire structure).

However, when I do so, and open the new FCX project file, Final Cut Crashes with an Error saying: "Final Cut Pro Quit Unexpectedly". I did a screen grab of the message and attached it as a Jpeg file.

Could someone point me to Information on how to Fix the Error/ do the Copy correctly?

Thanks,

Rajnesh

Thank you, Luis, Edwin, Al, and Tom.

I meant "Library", not "Project" (apologies for the confusion).

  1. I dragged the Library to the new Hard drive along with all its source material directories.
  2. I then disconnected my old Hard drive and clicked on the Library in the new Hard drive.
  3. I expected that FCX would ask me how to find/ relink the missing files - but, instead, it crashed with the message that I attached.

Strange thing is - I've done this in the past, and FCX was able to relink all the files. I guess, something changed in the 10.3.4 version.

I'll try Tom's suggestion next, and post the results back here this weekend (19th Nov. 2017).

Thanks again.

Take care,

Rajnesh

Best way to take a project to another export xml and take project file from your backup and take your master clips to another disk you can open it any system make sure what is your version only work with current version or upgraded then open fcp import xml take your project it will shows all clips missing file you can relink files from your disk.

If you really want complete flexibility it’s better to use a transfer library. Make a new event in the current library. Copy the project you want to move to the new event. Make a new library and move or copy the event into the new library. Make sure the new library is set to use managed media. Make sure Motion effects are stored in library. Consolidate the new library to copy everything into it. It’s a self-contained bundle that you can take anywhere on a properly formatted drive.

You say “project file”, but I am thinking you actually meant library. You don’t go around copying project files. Projects are inside events, and events are inside libraries.

The way to copy a library (they have these purple four star icons) is just to drag to the other hd in the Finder.

FCP X can open and close libraries, and you can also double-click in the Finder to open like any other documents.
