iphoto taking forever to show pictures to import

I’m trying to upload photos from my iPhone 6s to my iMac into iPhoto. I have 1900 photos to upload. In the import window, it shows 1900 new photos, but the photos aren’t there, just the empty boxes place holding where the photo should be. If I click import photos it gets stuck on preparing to import. I have force closed iPhoto numerous times and tried again with now luck. Help. I really need to upload these photos to my computer. Thanks!!
