iOS 11.0.3 iPhone 6s keyboard has weird characters

iPhone 6s w/iOS 11.0.3 recently added a strange character to the keyboard for texting: A with a ? in the center of a square box. When touched, it is I (capital i).

Also, text sounds have changed to a ding which is lovely, but I can't hear it unless the phone is next to me on a table. Help! Anyone! Please....

Thanks.

The typing issue is a bug (introduced in IOS11.1 - are you sure that you are still on 11.0.3?). The bug was supposedly fixed in "IOS11.1.1", so if you are not yet on that, update to it. The have been a handful of reports of the bug not being fixed by the update, but it seems to have fixed it for many.

The text sound is set under "Settings" / 'Sounds" / "Text Tone" - is that set correctly?
