messages not staying in notifications

Text message notifications are not remaining in the lock screen notifications list until I unlock my phone. It began when I updated to IOS 11. I’ll wake up in the morning & there will be no texts in the lock screen, but when I open my phone, there will be some. I’ve even seen them disappear from the lock screen without opening the phone. Inside notifications settings, show in lock screen and show in history are both on. No other applications are having this problem.

Hey, areckenrode.

I see that text message notifications won't stay put on the lock screen. You've even seen, at times, where it simply disappears. I'm happy to help.

Use notifications on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch -- Tap Settings > Notifications > Messages, then change the banner type from "Temporary" to "Persistent".

Change alert styles and settings for notifications

Customize your notifications with different alert styles so you can quickly act on emails, calendar invites, messages, and more.

To add or change an alert style for a notification, go to Settings > Notifications and select an app. Here are some alert styles that you can choose:

  • Allow Notifications: Turn on to get notifications from the app you selected.
  • Sounds: Have an app play a sound to alert you when you receive a notification.
  • Show on Lock Screen: Turn on to see notifications from the app on your Lock screen.
  • Show in History: See previous notifications from the app you select.
  • Banners: Choose how you want notifications to appear when your device is unlocked. Tap Temporary to have alerts appear on the screen and then go away. Or tap Persistent to have alerts stay on the screen until you act on it.
  • Show Previews: Choose what you want to see when you get a notification, like a text message.

Thank you for getting back with us, areckenrode. Since the notification isn't remaining on the lock screen, I'd like for you to reinstall the iOS software.

How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch -- Before proceeding, please be sure to have a fresh backup to keep your personal information safe. In order to back up your Health data, the backup needs to be encrypted. iCloud does this automatically, but iTunes doesn't. If you'd like to use iTunes to back up your phone, refer to this article: About encrypted backups in iTunes

If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch -- Even though the title of the article isn't specific to your issue, the section titled "Put your device in recovery mode and set it up again" will walk you through all the steps to reinstall the iOS software on your device. Test the issue once your phone has returned to the Home screen.

Let me know how that goes.

Enjoy your day!

Hey Brenden,

Thank you for your response; however, my issue doesn't seem to be with banners. I do not want persistent banners while I am using my phone.

I am referring to times when my phone is locked. A text message will come in, but the notification will not remain in the locked screen notification center. This type of notification isn't a banner, correct? If I get a message in WhatsApp, the notification will remain on the screen until I unlock my phone. But if I get an iMessage, it will not remain on the screen until I unlock my phone. My WhatsApp and iMessages notification settings are identical.

If I've been away from my phone for a while and I come back to see my notifications, there will be zero iMessage notifications in the locked screen notification list. There will be other notifications there. But when I unlock my phone I will have iMessages. I would like the notifications for iMessages to stay in the locked screen notification center until I have a chance to see them.
