In safari I cannot find a way to close the sidetab of bookmarks, reading list and history when turning the phone sideways to panorama and yet in mail I have the little expand or shrink arrows. What am I missing?

At the top left where the forward and back arrows are, tap the 'book' to close the Sidebar. If you have scrolled down the page, you may need to scroll to the top of the page to access it.
