Can Magic Mouse 2 be charged by plugging into a 5v USB charger?

I don't fancy the idea of leaving my iMac switched on for several hours whilst the mouse and keyboard are being charged so can I safely plug them into one of my 5v USB chargers?

Incidentally after well over 2 months since getting my new iMac the mouse still has 10% and the keyboard 20% of charge remaining . . . though this could be because the computer has only had light use.

Final Cut Pro X, macOS Sierra (10.12.6), 27" 5K iMac, Mac mini i5 2.5GH

After some more extensive searching I have discovered an 18 month old thread confirming that the Magic Mouse and presumably the keyboard can be charged safely using a 5v USB power adapter.

Options for charging a new magic mouse.

Your magic Mouse is behaving more or less as it should do. You have a few days left but you should charge it when you can find a moment. Remember, a fifteen minute charge during coffee break time will give you enough charge for a couple of weeks or more.

Thanks for the response. I saw the page in your link before posting my original question but unfortunately it contained no information about using USB chargers.

This morning my mouse was down to 10% charge and I plugged it into my iMac.

After 20 minutes it had risen to 26%

Then I decided to use my 2000ma USB charger. It has now been connected to the charger for over 3 hours but has only got up to 66%

The whole rate of charge has been markedly slower than those first 20 minutes on the computer.

Any idea why a powerful standalone charger appears to be charging many times slower than the iMac?

Other items that I use the charger for, like tablets, charge much quicker than plugging them into the computer.

Hello again, Ian,

You should only use the charger supplied with the Mouse or the Keyboard (though I think either will work properly with the other).

You can charge both through your machine by connecting the lightning cable between the device and the USB port ... or from the mains with a USB Power adapter.

Be sure to have the device 'ON' to achieve a faster charge. I suspect your mouse may have been switched off to charge at the slower rate you are reporting. 20 minutes should have got you to close to 40% if not more.

The mouse, the battery and the official chargers are designed to work together so using an extra powerful charger will not result in a faster charge.

There is no charger with the Magic Mouse 2, you just get a USB-Lightning cable to plug it into the iMac.

The mouse was switched ON.

Going from 26% to 100% using the Power Adapter took about 4 hours 25 minutes and seemed to speed up a bit after it got past 75%

Apple claims it takes about a couple of hours to charge using the computer, so I wouldn't expect it to take longer with a good quality adapter.

I'm just wondering whether there is some circuitry in the mouse telling it to charge slowly for some reason?

No. Take it in for evaluation if you are unhappy. My mouse, in keeping with Apple's suggestions, goes to 25% in 10 minutes, 80% in about an hour and 100 % in just over 2 1/2 hours. That links with the link I provided you with that shows examples of the rapid and slower charge rates.
