I understand you are trying to update but are getting the error that there isn't enough space. I know it is important to be able to update to the latest iOS. The following article has information about this issue: If you need more space for an iOS update

Since neither my iPhone nor any I help to support have had problem one on iOS 11.1.1, I can see no reason for your gloom & doom post to hold off on upgrading to it. Instead I suggest you fix your iPhone.
