iPad: Strange auto-complete for letter “i”

Can anyone tell me why I’m suddenly getting an auto-complete with an exclamation point and a question mark inside a square any time I type the letter “i”? Is happening every time there’s a space and then the letter. This is only the most bizarre of a number of idiotic auto-complete suggestions I’m starting to get, including random capitalized words. It used to be limited to nouns that my iPad or iPhone assumed were athletic teams or 70s bands (Eagles), but has gotten to be quite random now . . . words like “Butter,” or something equally nonsensical.

Help much appreciated.
